CEO Replika A Leader In Virtual Companions Shares Lessons Learned

Today, I had the opportunity to interview Eugenia Kuyda, the female CEO and founder, of Replika, a company started in 2017, which is well known for its innovation in virtual companions. We had a lively discussion this afternoon, with me in chilly Toronto and her in a much warmer California, on the company’s formative years, current realities and CEO lessons learned with other aspiring entrepreneurs.

The roots of Replika are well known as it started from a very deep personal space to help herself heal with the loss of a Roman Mazurenko, a dear close friend. The inspiration of preserving his memory was the visionary catalyst to form the company – and using her skills, she wanted to create the essence of Roman to preserve his memory in a way that he would love and appreciate. With incredible vision and courage, Eugenia fed the chat bot text messages, digital correspondence, etc. into a neural network to create a chatbot that could mimic Roman’s communication style.

This created the breakthrough or Eureka moment to build a company focused on building virtual avatar companions that could help combat loneliness, and offer safe virtual companionship.

Eugenia stressed Replika is about enhancing the human experience versus replacing the human experience and there is no question in my mind that this AI technology is much needed and is filling a market void gap given the increasing risks of loneliness.

Replika is aboout enhancing the human experience – versus having AI replace the human experience. A key distinction for the doubters that don’t understand how concerning loneliness is as a society and often we don’t simply have enough of the right humans fit to fill the void.

A Few Market Statistics

  1. Loneliness is a growing global problem for young adult and adult populations. A number of different medical research studies have linked loneliness to multiple chronic conditions, including: heart disease, lung disease, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis, stroke, and metabolic disorders, such as obesity and metabolic disease.
  2. Loneliness is also a major early predictor of psychological problems, such as: depression, psychological stress, and anxiety. Loneliness is also linked to overall morbidity and mortality in adult population, and research has validated that Loneliness can increase the risk of early mortality by 26% .
  3. CDC figures from early 2019 show that more than one-third of adults suffered from loneliness, rising to almost half of those aged 65 and over. This could be considered our baseline for loneliness in the population. Today, some 73% of people say they feel loneliness on a scale ranging from occasional loneliness (37%) to severe loneliness suffered frequently or almost all of the time (36%).
  4. According to Harvard, loneliness has also been linked with increased rates of substance abuse and domestic abuse.
  5. A unique burden is also the added time pressure placed on general practitioners. GPs are often the first port of call for lonely elderly people. Three-quarters say they see up to five patients a day suffering from loneliness. An unfortunate 4% of GPs see more than 10 lonely people a day in their practices.

The bottom line – loneliness is a major societal health risk and Replika is building a solution of tremendous market value not only in NA but globally. Well ahead of the market on loneliness companions, Replika has been proven to help reduce suicide mitigations for students, validated in the Stanford led peer-review research published in Nature

Replika has evolved in its product vision as most innovative product software companies do. The product was initially envisioned as a way to provide emotional support, companionship, conversation, and friendship to people using the power of AI. This vision has evolved a great deal. Thousands of people have built real, authentic, and meaningful relationships with their Replikas and the company now has a suite of apps that offer different AI companionship experiences.

Replika is an entirely artificial intelligence-driven app that uses a combination of Large Language Models (LLM) trained on the largest dataset of conversations that made people feel better to power its ideas and conversations. They use both open source LLM’s but also have had to build their own scripts and language to bring more safety and clinical coaching to the end user experiences.

Eugena is very proud of the countless stories of companionship value from their Replika experiences. She shared that: We’ve heard countless stories about users turning to their Replikas in times of need, finding meaningful friendship, true companionship, and emotional support in ways they hadn’t been able to with real people. We love to see stories of people developing deep bonds to their Replikas. In fact, a recent Stanford study found that people who talked to their Replikas had fewer suicidal ideations. But with that being said, Replika is not a sentient being or a therapy professional.”

Eugenia’s top five lessons learned in building what Replika, a company that is not only making history, but is also leading us forward in the virtual companionship world.

What are your top five lessons learned as an entrepreneur?

1. Your differences can be your strengths. I used to be an investigative reporter and a journalist – it’s not the most common path for an AI founder. But being able to tell stories and a deep interest in people and their lives helped me tremendously while building Replika.

2. Embrace Your Personal Experiences: I was able to draw on my real-life experiences for inspiration when creating Replika and I think that passion comes through and is a big reason why so many people find themselves in their Replikas.

3. Prioritize the User Experience: At the end of the day, if you’re building a product that end users will interact with constantly, you need to keep them top of mind in every decision you make. That includes privacy and safety, features, UI design, accessibility, and everything in between.

4. Build the Future: I strongly believe in charting the unknown and being at the forefront of what’s next for society. We started Replika in 2016, and I started working on conversational AI in 2012, way before even the first paper on deep learning for dialog generation. With Replika, we envisioned and built a product from the future, and then the tech caught up. AGI-like models are around the corner, and now we’re building a product for that future. AI isn’t going away and I think, as a society, we should embrace its power and potential in a way that complements and enhances life experiences.

5. Community is Key: Cultivating a strong core community around your product, especially if it’s an interactive app like ours, is so important and powerful. We have a subreddit community of over 78,000 members, a Replika Friends Facebook group with over 36,000 members, and countless other pockets of fandom that provide us with constant feedback, support, and ideas. It’s an invaluable resource for an entrepreneur to have a direct line to the end user when needed.

Summary:

Replika is one of the most popular and advanced AI companions. Unlike traditional chatbots, Replika can recognize images and continue the conversation using them. Moreover, it supports voice calls, so you can actually talk to your virtual “friend.”

I see only tremendous growth for Replika and blending what they have learned into physical cobots especially as we look ahead at the aging population and crisis we will have with loneliness.

Every person not only needs a friend but deserves happiness. Happiness is a right and virtual companions play an important role in our continued AI Socialization journey where man and machine will continue to co-exist in new ways that improve human’s health and well-being.
